Work Based Diplomas
Work based diplomas replaced National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ's) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1st January 2011. Assessment takes place either in the work-place or in an approved assessment location on a continuous basis.
EQL Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Horse Care
This qualification has been developed by the equine industry to replace NVQ Level 1 in Horse Care for the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and has been developed from the equine National Occupational Standards. This qualification is available to candidates over the age of 14 years and specifically aimed at those between the age of 14 – 19 years. Candidates over the age of 19 years may be looking to re-train and develop basic skills in horse care to provide an alternative career.
This qualification will offer the learner a sound foundation which will provide them with the knowledge and skills to progress into employment and future learning and development. Holders of this qualification should be able to obtain work as a groom and yard worker on any equine establishment as they should possess the skills and knowledge required to care for horses under supervision and to carry out general stable management routines.
Competence at this level will involve candidates demonstrating skills and applying knowledge that they are able to carry out a basic range of routine tasks related to the care and use of horses under supervision. Assessment is carried out through continuous assessment at the candidate’s place of work or at an approved assessment site.
The qualification is made up of 10 practical units and 10 principle units, covering the knowledge-based elements of the practical delivery. When credited to candidates, these will be a valuable guide to their ability to carry out a particular task in a stable yard or stud. It is desirable that candidates should obtain the majority of their training and assessment in the workplace. There are also 4 additional units, which do not form part of the qualification but are available to candidates who have an interest in achieving some basic riding units.
