What we do
Equestrian Qualifications GB Limited(EQL) is an Awarding Body for equestrian activity. We are a small, specialist Awarding Body accredited by Ofqual, the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator. This means our systems, procedures and quality assurance practices are thorough and we receive monitoring to ensure these practices are maintained.
EQL aims to provide an excellent level of customer service for its centres and candidates. We award a range of qualifications on behalf of The British Horse Society and the British Equestrian Federation. We also award Work Based Diplomas (which replaced National Vocational Qualifications on 1 January 2011) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications at Levels 1, 2 and 3.
Most but not all of the qualifications listed below are accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework. Please contact us if you would like a list of our current accredited qualifications.
EQL award the following examinations on behalf of the BHS:
- EQL Level 1 Certificate in BHS Riding Horses
- EQL Level 1 Certificate in BHS Horse Knowledge and Care
- EQL Level 2 Diploma in BHS Riding Horses (including EQL Level 2 Certificate in Riding horses on the Flat)
- EQL Level 2 Diploma in BHS Horse Knowledge and Care (including EQL Level 2 Certificate in Horse Care and EQL Level 2 Award in the Principles of Horse Care)
- EQL Level 3 Diploma in BHS Riding Horses (including EQL Level 3 Certificate in Riding Horses on the Flat)
- EQL Level 3 Diploma in BHS Riding Horse Knowledge and Care (Including EQL Level 3 Certificate in Horse Care and EQL Level 3 Award in the Principles of Horse Care)
- EQL Level 3 Certificate in BHS Preliminary Teaching of Horse Riding (including EQL Level 3 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport)
- EQL BHS Assistant Instructor Certificate
- Stage 4 Horse Knowledge Care and Riding
- Intermediate Teaching Test
- EQL Level 5 Intermediate Instructor Certificate for The Equine Coach
- BHS Stable Manager Certificate
- BHS Senior Equitation & Coaching Certificate
- BHS Instructors Certificate
- The Fellowship of The British Horse Society
- EQL Level 2 Award in BHS Riding Horses Safely on the Public Highway
- EQL Level 2 Certificate for Assistant Ride leaders in Equestrian Tourism
- EQL Level 3 Certificate for Ride Leaders in Equestrian Tourism
- BHS Centre Manager in Equestrian Tourism
EQL also awards the following Coaching Certificates (Equine) on behalf of the British Equestrian Federation:
- EQL Level 1 Award in Coaching Equestrian Riding

- SVQ Level 2 Horse Care at SCQF Level 5/EQL Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Horse Care
- SVQ Level 3 Horse Care and Management at SCQF Level 6/EQL Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Horse Care and Management
